Can we show some respect for the Club Banger please?
By: D.T. Henry
I was recently in Miami, Florida on the night the Miami Heat became the 2012 NBA champions. Of course I headed out into the nightlife for the celebrations, which were not hard to find. I eventually landed in a club and found myself bouncing to a few songs I knew, but do not own, by choice. What I realized is that some songs are just club bangers and nothing more. The song is not intended to inspire the next Rhodes Scholar, nor cure the dysfunction in the black community.
As I bounced and bopped to “Cashin Out”, “Same Damn Time”, and “Stay Schemin”, I remembered some old school hits like AMG’s “B*@%h Better Have My Money”, “Put It in My Mouth” by Akinyele, and “Da Dip” by Freak Nasty. After awhile it dawned on me that while, hip hop is criticized for its commercial material, sometimes we have to understand that some of it is what it is…a great club banger.
