Kanye told us at the BET awards that the “Yeezy’s jumped over the Jumpmans.”
He’s not the first rapper to take on Nike in a battle of the kicks.
Remember 50 Cent‘s G-Unit sneakers? They were originally created to compete with the Nike Air Force 1′s and they had a pretty short shelf life. Everybody was giving 50 the side eye when they heard he was collaborating with Reebok– especially at a time when everybody was all about Air Force 1′s. Nelly had everybody wanting two pair.
But before you chalk 50′s Reebok collabo up as a loss, you should hear how much he made off the deal. 50, ever the businessman, says he made around $80 million working with Reebok.
In an interview with Big Boy on New York’s Power 106 FM, the radio host asked 50 about the biggest check he’d ever received.
Believe it or not, it was from the Reebok collaboration. 50 cent said that he sold almost four million G-Unit sneakers. He also revealed that he was able to hop on the deal with Reebok after the company missed out on getting LeBron James.
